Summer Programs

Our community programs provide educational and enrichment programs to the Guilford Day community as well as the Triad community at large. Guilford Day School Community Programs also serves those needing motivational support and/or self-esteem enhancement, as well as gifted students in need of enrichment. All of our regular programs are available during the summer (except for our after-school program) as well as the following additions:

Systematic Multi-sensory Instruction Language Experience (SMILE)

Direct instruction and remediation techniques in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, reading comprehension, spelling, and sentence and paragraph formation through research based, specialized instruction. Skills are taught in an intensive, structured and individualized manner. The course methodology consists of pre- and post- assessment, individualized instruction, mastery learning, ongoing measurement, immediate feedback, task analysis, intensive practice, overlearning, and generalization. Classes consist of no more than 4 to 6 students. The SMILE program runs two hours per day for six weeks.

Sentence and Paragraph Labs

Direct instruction in sentence or paragraph formation. The University of Kansas offers a highly specialized learning curriculum from which we use writing strategies that have been proven to be extremely helpful for students that struggle in the area of written language. These separate courses run for an hour and a half per day for two weeks.

Courses for Credit

Courses for academic credit are designed to offer high school students an opportunity to build strong study habits and organizational skills while making up lost credits or getting ahead in coursework. Students will work in small groups (average class size of 6) with an instructor for mastery of a particular subject area. Portfolios will be maintained to record student progress. Classes will be offered based on enrollment.
