The North Carolina State Theatre Middle School Competition was held on Saturday March 15th. Ten schools competed representing the eastern half of our state. Many more wanted to compete but you have to have all your application materials ready and all money in when you hit the send button once opening day begins. The ten slots fill up early and there were a lot of schools on the waiting list so I'm glad we got in on time. Guilford Day took five awards. That is the most awards any single school has taken in the last three years that we have been attending. They are as follows:
- There are ten honorable mention in acting awards - five male and five female. Out of the 200 students there, Erin Arnold and Gus Eller each won an award.
- There is one award for Best Ensemble Acting. Out of the ten schools, Guildford Day took this one too.
- There are two awards given for superior play production. Out of the ten schools, Guilford Day took one of these home as well.
- And there is one award for excellence in playwriting - I (Sonja) humbly and graciously received that award.
Students at Guilford Day School explore the world of drama through improvisation, pantomime, theater games, scene and ensemble work. They learn the origins and basics of drama and acting as well as theatre terminology and etiquette. They collaborate together with thoughts and ideas to form their own play as well as receive and understand pre-written scripts. They go through the rehearsal process, sharing their experience and knowledge of performance before a live audience. In addition, they view works done by their peers as well as other age groups to further broaden their understanding of live theater. They work together as an ensemble to accomplish the majority of goals in the classroom.
Drama is mandatory for all students in grades 1-8. Drama may be offered to students in grades 9-12 depending on student interest and instructor availability. Students explore the world of theater by learning theater terminology, studying other works, and participating in the rehearsal and performance of various plays and piecemeal works. They also learn about the audition process for those wanting to become professional actors, what other careers are available in the theatre, and how they can apply this course to non-theatrical careers.
