Music @ Guilford Day School

Most teachers at Guilford Day School often incorporate music into the teaching environment, whether through soothing background music, an active warm-up before class starts, or a memory trick. However, the 2006-07 school year saw the beginning of a formal music program for grades one through five.

The first year of the music program exposed the students to singing, movement, rhythm instruments, recorders, boomwhackers, and dance. Students performed traditional American pieces along with music from England, France, and Ghana.

As the music program enters its second year at Guilford Day, it will expand to include students in the sixth grade, with aspirations of becoming available to older students as well. Students in the music program are exposed to a variety of different kinds of music from different time periods and cultures. Students sing, participate in choreographed routines, and learn how to play rhythm instruments. Music appreciation as well as instruction is emphasized.

If you are interested in learning more about the music program or donating any musical instruments, please contact Kay McMurphy at kay@guilfordday.org.
